Here's the first-hand account of the Dominican priest and sculptor who worked under the direction of Sr. Lucia the last surviving witness to the 1917 Marian apparitions in Fatima as she guided him in perfecting the famed statue of Our Lady of Fatima.
Sr. Lucia insisted Our Lady's hands be positioned just so, the tunic fall exactly the way she remembered, the star placed on the proper spot on the tunic, and the ball of light around her neck reaching almost to her waist. She would make corrections as Fr. Tom worked, and at times would even take one of the tools and make changes to his model.
Fr. Tom emerged with far more than an exact replica of how Our Lady appeared; he came to understand and recounts here in these pages Sr. Lucia's intimate explanations of what happened in Fatima, the spiritual meanings of the apparitions, whether the Consecration to Russia occurred, why the secrets had to remain secrets for so long, and why Mary chose to appear to three young shepherd children in rural Portugal.
Fr. Tom reminds us that Fatima is a place of miracles, and he points us toward the penitential character of Our Lady's message, especially the importance of praying the Rosary.
Few books can provide such a penetrating, close encounter with a major Catholic event as Fr. McGlynn's Vision of Fatima. And only this book leads us into the heart and mind of a Portuguese nun who met face to face with the Mother of God.

Knowing that the 100th anniversary was approaching I picked up this book to learn more about it. As a recent convert to Catholicism, there are many beliefs and traditions I am still studying. I chose this book on Fatima because it was written by someone who had worked closely with Lucy, one of the shepherd children who had experienced the apparitions, to create a sculpture that was true to the image the children saw. This book gives detailed accounts, both from Lucy and from others who saw the events and the miracles that surrounded Fatima. My favorite miracle were the 3 doves that settled around the statue at the 300th anniversary of Portugal naming Mary as the queen of Portugal. Detailed history of the events and the country that it occurred in that I didn't think I would find in any other book. Well worth the read.Product details

Vision of Fatima edition by Fr Thomas McGlynn Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This is the best book on Fatima. It reflects the peace of the message, the faith of the children, and it gently moves toward prayer and penance. Well written.
The inside story about the "construction/creation" of the one image of Our Lady of Fatima personally authorized or approved by Sister Lucia. Written by the priest-sculptor who happily took her direction. He also made the statue (19 feet tall) that stands in a niche on the front of the Cathedral at the Fatima Shrine in Portugal. Written about 1948 and republished for this 100th anniversary year, it's an easy, delightful read.
I AM SO VERY GLAD THAT I ORDERED THE BOOK VISION OF FATIMA. I REALLY ENJOYED READING IT AND I KNOW THAT IT IS ONE OF THE BOOKS THAT I HAVE ORDERED THAT I WILL REREAD AS I HAVE DONE WITH CERTAIN ONES THAT I HAVE. THERE ARE A GROUP OF BOOKS THAT ONE NEVER TIRES OF AND THIS TO ME IS ONE OF THEM.
If you'd like to learn more about Fatima from the accounts of people who were there, including Sister Lucia (Irma Dores), give this book a read. Fr. McGlynn is an excellent writer. His prose is journalistic while also in keeping with his faith. He interviewed Irma Dores extensively and created a Fatima statue based on her vision. Fr. McGlynn's account of the way she supervised his sculpting is great - both for the way she would move things even a quarter of an inch and for the way he wrestled with humility when she took such artistic license with his creative work. That's just one example of the readability of the book, and of how the author brings people to life on the page. Fr. McGlynn visited Fatima and wrote this book only 30 years after the apparitions, and the resulting book is rich in detail and interviews with many people.
I enjoyed the book tremendously and felt like I was at Fatima and with Lucy. I was glad that the book was republished. I heard about the book on SiriusXM in Pathways of Learning on the Catholic Channel. I heard the show twice and said to myself that I wanted to read this. I had gotten a little statue of Fatima from my neighbor who had visited Fatima on her trip. As a hobbyist I built a Church dollhouse and put the statue in the church. I call my church Our Lady of Fatima. I also have the music for the song that was written for Fatima. I have a strong connection to Fatima.
Fr McGlynn is an American sculptor priest who created the first authentic representation of Our Lady of Fatima. He interviewed and received direction from Lucia (the eldest seer) herself. I enjoyed the interaction between the two. Especially since she was very precise about what Mary looked like. Some reviewers said there are no pictures, in fact there are three.
Some if the details in this book feel a bit tedious, picturesque views and not so important events -for example, but these make the reader feel a bit as if you are travelling with him and visiting with some of the people yourself. Some portions of this book can be found free on the internet, but you do not get the full experience that way. The book is not dry, but at times requires some patience or skimming. I suggest you approach it as a sight seeing trip or pilgrimage, take your time and reflect. Happy travels (in the book)!!
A good read. It may well be titled, "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Devotee to Fatima." The story takes place in 1947 as Father McGlynn explores an event that happened in 1917. Interesting that two world views, late World War I, and post World War Two are present. Nevertheless, the true spiritual message of Fatima is not compromised. I enjoyed reading of McGlynn, the dedicated sculpture, trying to meet the exact demands of St. Lucy, and in the end revealing the message of Fatima. A good book both for those familiar with the miracle of Fatima, and those new to the vision of Mary 100 years ago to three young children.
